GONE baby GONE

i just saw the movie last night and it definitely was worth my time. it's one of those movies you don't expect much but makes you stay for a few minutes re-assessing your morals long after the credits have rolled on the screen. the movie is also the directorial debut of ben affleck ( ben hasnt been cashing in with the consecutive flops he has had on the big screen recently making directing a more convenient escape - and he is doing really well on this one). gone baby gone stars casey affleck, ben's brother, who is just right for the role. watch it and tell me whatyathink, whatyawudvdone etc...

hmmm, on a side note, a scene featured the STO. NINO in the movie. i took a screenshot of the featured image with my cellphone.

CAUTION: i am no movie critic..and the above is definitely NOT a review...hahaha..im just inviting you to watch the movie, that's all...

RAINBOW

we were killing time at a table outside the office about 9AM today- chatting and talking endlessly, laughing, staring blankly at times at nothing in particular etc. - while waiting for our break to end when I and my officemates saw a rainbow. it was the first rainbow i witnessed this year (hurraahh!!), not to mention the first one i ever laid eyes on eversince i stepped on Cebu. it was drizzling the whole morning and everyone wore sleepy faces. a rainbow is just a rainbow, i know. no metaphors to be attached. it's just a rainbow. a natural phenomena that occurs a thousand times a day in thousands of places the world all over, so there shouldn't be anything special about it. so i thought. nevertheless, it's agood thing though our sleepy faces managed to muster a smile for a moment after seeing it hanging there for a few fleeting minutes. hmmm, it must be something after all!

lately i have been collecting snapshots of weird signages, billboards and signboards. wrong spelling, weird signs, grammatical error etc...it has become a strange habit to look for them while riding on a bus or walking down the sidewalks of Cebu or while perusing over menus at some spooky restaurants. I had a few taken back from my hometown and some here in cebu. i will be posting them from time to time (if i feel like it since this is not a blog entirely for that subject..hahah) if you have some, send em and i will be more than glad to post em here...

SINULOG 2008......is this post too late?

I haven't been active lately with blogging, writing, reading a book. Even checking friendster seems to be so burdensome. Procrastination is a sin, I know. A lot have happened worthy of writing but I just couldn’t bring myself to grab that laptop and start my fingers tapping on the keyboard. My fingers seem to have a mind of their own so that my hands are always full doing something. Worse my brain willingly obliges.

But here I am, hoping I will be back on track. I have a million stories to tell.

First, the incomparable Sinulog Festival!

The color. The dance. The sound. The beat. The chants. The faith. The people!

Ok, I know this is probably the latest story to be written about the event but who the hell cares. haha!

Cebu was one big party hole the other Sunday (January 20th). It was the feast of the Sto.Nino and not a street is devoid of the Sinulog spirit. Celebs were in the city and expats are walking the avenues with their obviously in-awe facial expressions painted with the question ‘So, this is how a third world country parteys!!?’ The jeepneys are of no help since all main roads were closed. We practically walked kilometers unaware of our destination – no direction, just plain wandering the streets. People painted their faces. Henna tattoo was a lucrative business. Everyone was ecstatic. It’s a different feeling when you’re with the crowd – waving at the Sto.Nino when the float carrying the Child Jesus passed by. I’ve never seen so many people my whole life. It’s like everyone knows everyone. I thought, now there’s something we all have in common – our faith.

I had very few pictures I took with my cellphone ( pictures will be posted next time - haven't uploaded it yet- huhuhu ) because forecasts said pickpocket business is on its peak during the feast – it’s also the Pickpocket Fiesta! I don’t have a digital camera so my humble cellphone is doing the job for me for my blog. Some of the pics were taken at an exhibit at SM where different images of the Sto.Nino were featured – paintings, sculptures dating back centuries. A few of the pics were taken during the grand procession the day before of the feast (Jan 19) where thousands upon thousands thronged the streets and the Basilica. It was drizzling but the crowd never thinned with all the open umbrellas making a collage of colors to as far as my eyes can see far down the street, I wondered how lucrative business umbrella production must be. I realized, almost everyone owns an umbrella! That’s big business not to mention many umbrellas are disposable and most are made of not so tough materials which makes repurchase highly possible. I bought two umbrellas last year by the way and the second one is starting to disintegrate already. I’m not even an umbrella freak - I don’t use it that much.

Back to the procession I attended…. We were waiting for over an hour for the Sto. Nino to pass by when finally the carriage came close. Cameras flashed. People waved. I never really knew one should wave when the Sto. Nino passes by, so I waved like everybody else did. It felt awkward at first but it felt good. Showing one’s faith shouldn’t be something to be ashamed of, I thought. ( Ranting about your faith in a public place, like say in a cafeteria during breaks, is a different thing. Don’t get me wrong!) When the carriage passed by and just when we started to move with the wave of people, a big explosion was heard together with the graffiti that showered the street. The University od San Carlos must have prepared it for the Sto.Nino. Everyone clapped and waved more upon hearing the booming explosion. It was so synchronized – the colorful graffiti and the fireworks. A few minutes later, a big explosion was heard again – no graffiti this time. It turned out it was a transformer that caused the booming sound and people panicked. No fireworks were prepared after all. People were running to the sides nervously. Good thing no one was hurt. No wowowee-like stampede happened, thank God! Power was cut-off and a lady was frantically running in front of us to somewhere safe crying “Ang transporter mibuto!” (The transporter exploded!) With all the high spirits everyone seems to be having, no one heard. A few minutes later, the streets had filled with teeming people again moving slowly to the direction of the Basilica.

******************

I had a blast celebrating the feast of the Sto. Nino. It didn’t matter what color of paint we wore on our face – what mattered was we wore our smiles. And it didn’t matter if we don’t know how to shake those hips to dance – what mattered was our hearts danced in tune to the beat the king of dance creates.

P.S. >>> I know I promised to write more but it seems like this is taking a lot of pace already. Will have to save the next story for the next post.

I just finished Jessica Zafra’s TWISTED 8 : the night of the living twisted…the long story cosmos had to let me endure before I get the book next time. Hahaha!)
